Welcome to our FAQ section, where we address some of the most common questions about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
1. What is the NDIS? – The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government initiative designed to provide support and services to individuals with disabilities. It aims to enhance their independence and participation in the community.
2. Who is eligible for the NDIS? – Eligibility for the NDIS is determined by several factors, including age, residency, and the nature of the disability. Generally, you must be under 65 years of age, an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to participate in everyday activities. To discuss your situation and get further information, you are able to contact your local area coordinator. As local area coordinators are very busy, you can also contact Quality Care Victoria and we can assist with this navigation process.
3. How do I apply for the NDIS? – To apply for the NDIS, you need to contact the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and complete an Access Request Form. You may also need to provide supporting documentation from healthcare professionals.
4. What types of support does the NDIS cover? –The NDIS covers a wide range of supports, including personal care, transport, therapeutic supports, and assistance with daily living. It also funds equipment and home modifications necessary for improving your quality of life. You can find more information about what supports the NDIS funds by clicking here. The NDIS funds supports based on what is reasonable and necessary based on each person’s needs. This means that the NDIS may fund something for you that they cannot fund for another participant if your disability related needs are different.
5. How is my NDIS plan created? – Your NDIS plan is created through a planning meeting with an NDIA planner or a Local Area Coordinator (LAC). During this meeting, your goals, needs, and current supports are discussed to tailor a plan that suits your individual circumstances.
6. Can I choose my service providers? – Yes, the NDIS allows you to choose your service providers. This flexibility ensures that you can select providers who best meet your needs and preferences.
7. What is Support Coordination? – Support Coordination is a service that helps you understand and implement your NDIS plan. It involves connecting you with service providers, coordinating supports, and building your capacity to manage your plan independently.
8. How often is my NDIS plan reviewed? – Your NDIS plan is typically reviewed once a year. However, you can request a review at any time if your circumstances change or if you feel your current plan no longer meets your needs.
9. What should I do if I disagree with a decision made by the NDIA?
If you disagree with a decision made by the NDIA, you have the right to request a review. This process involves submitting a request for an internal review, where a different NDIA officer will reassess the decision. If you are still not happy with this, you are able to appeal with decision through the Administrative Review Tribunal.
